Our Story – Friends of Pleasure Island State Parks
Friends of Pleasure Island State Parks organization drives impact by promoting, advocating, and educating the public about the importance of recreation, history, ecology, and conservation of natural resources within two unique state parks that are located on one island, Carolina Beach State Park and Fort Fisher State Recreation Area.
This organization works with park rangers, environmental educators, students, and community volunteers to address the needs of both of these protected areas. This group serves as a philanthropic and volunteer organization for the maintenance of programs, development of facilities, and promotion of recreational resources.
Both park locations are steeped in the captivating historical and ecological context that captures the attention of over a million local, national, and international visitors.
Carolina Beach State Park provides access to some of North Carolina’s best-kept fishing spots, a campground shaded by southern live oaks, and miles of hiking trails that traverse over 13 different ecosystems. These areas are full of rare plants and animals including the Venus Flytrap, only native within 60 miles of this park. This park is a great place for bird watching and provides an important migration corridor.
Fort Fisher State Recreation is a park located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cape Fear River and consists of nearly six miles of pristine beaches, a four-wheel-drive area, and trails through a salt marsh brimming with wildlife. This area provides a glimpse of the dynamic ecosystem known as a barrier spit where the only constant changes. Sixteen threatened and endangered species can be found here depending on the time of year.
FPISP was founded by local community members invited by park rangers to form a partnership to create a nonprofit advocacy group to help promote local financial sustainability, increase community engagement, raise funds through events and donations, and assist in the completion of park projects.
